Rules

This page lists the general guidelines pertaining to Recreation and Wellness.


Benefits

Participation in the six areas listed permits the individual to acquire and maintain muscular strength, coordination, and endurance; to become proficient in specific physical skills; to relieve stress; and to have fun. Involvement is the key to successful campus living. Quality of life is enhanced by developing a philosophy for lifetime fitness.

Assumption of Risk

Individuals are encouraged to have a physical examination and obtain adequate health and accident insurance prior to participation in any Recreation and Wellness activity. UWF does not provide insurance coverage for participants. Individuals who participate in Recreation and Wellness activities will be doing so at their own risk. Participation is voluntary and The University of West Florida is not responsible for injuries that may occur to individuals.


Rules and Regulations

  • A valid Nautilus Card or scanning in via the UWF RECWELL app is required for entry into the HLS Facility.
  • Scheduled University activities take precedence.
  • Inappropriate behavior may result in the termination of facility use with no refund. As a university patron, you will be expected to abide by all university policies.
  • Proper, non-marking athletic shoes are required.
  • No food, gum or drink with the exception of water is allowed in the facility.
  • No use of photographic equipment without prior approval is allowed in the facility. For approval please contact recreation@uwf.edu.
  • UWF Recreation and Wellness is not responsible for any lost and/or stolen items.

Fitness Center Rules

  • Participants must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Top, bottom, and closed-toe, closed-heel athletic shoes are required.
  • Jeans or clothing with zippers or exposed metal are not permitted.
  • Equipment must be used for the manner in which it is designed.
  • Equipment may not be altered or removed from the Fitness Center.
  • Slamming, dropping of weights, or loose chalk is prohibited.
  • Weight collars are required on all free bar lifts with plates.
  • Unauthorized personal training is prohibited. No solicitation is allowed.
  • Fitness staff have complete authority. Please respect enforcement of rules and regulations.

Guest Policy

  • Guest Passes can be purchased at the Customer Service Desk for $8.00 per day.
  • The guest must have a form of picture ID.
  • Any guest under the age of 5 years is permitted without a fee.
  • Guests under the age of 16 do not need a photo ID.
  • All guests must sign the HLS Facility release of liability before entering the facility.

Age Restrictions

  • Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Children under 16 are not authorized to use the Fitness Center.
  • Any guest under the age of 5 years is permitted without a fee.

Grievance Process

If a student has a complaint, they must provide a written description of the complaint, including the date and time of the event, the person or group with whom the student has the complaint, and the names of any witnesses. The written complaint must be submitted to the Director of Recreation and Wellness within 30 days of the event. Please email the letter to:

The Executive Director of Recreation, Wellness and Student Health Services or his/her designee will then meet with the grievant to review the complaint, after which the Executive Director of Recreation, Wellness and Student Health Services will determine if the complaint can be handled by that office or needs to be referred to other university officials. Examples of grievances that will be referred to other University officials include discrimination or sexual harassment complaints against faculty, which are referred to the Provost and complaints against University staff, including but not limited to discrimination or sexual harassment, which are referred to Human Resources.

Once it is determined that the Department of Recreation and Wellness is the appropriate forum for the resolution of the grievance, the Director of Recreation and Wellness will contact the accused. At this point, every effort will be made to resolve the complaint through informal discussion with the parties.

Should informal discussion with the parties fail, and the grievant desires a hearing, the Executive Director of Recreation, Wellness and Student Health Services will request the Dean of Students to intervene and follow the protocols set forth by the Dean of Students Office.

Students can also utilize the Dean of Students website as a central location for a better understanding of how to file general concerns or grievances with the University.
