New Supervisor Boot Camp


Every quarter, new supervisors will be invited to attend a three-day (1 day a week for three weeks) 6 to 8-hour workshop. These workshops will consist of a variety of topics, training, activities, and discussions that will enable new supervisors to learn key supervisory skills that will enhance their level of leadership and provide participants with essential skills for leading others in the workplace. New supervisors will walk away with several proven tools that they can apply immediately to their supervisory responsibilities. Upon completion, each participant will receive a certificate of completion and a branded take away item. Lunch will be provided each day.

QPR Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Training - QPR stands for Question, Persuade, Refer, 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. In this training, participants will learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. At the end of this training, participants will receive certification as a QPR Gatekeeper.

Respectful Communication in the Workplace

Diversity in the Workplace - This course will discuss diversity, inclusion, bias, and microaggressions.

Harassment and Retaliation Prevention - This course will discuss civil rights laws, the UWF prohibiting discrimination, harassment, and retaliation policy, risky behavior, and supervisor responsibility for prevention.

The Power of Progressive Discipline and Performance Documentation - Learn how to separate poor performance from a poor attitude, and how to counsel and discipline employees. Provide guidance to positive, progressive discipline which begins with coaching and escalating to stronger measures only as needed to solve the problem. Help supervisors address continuous negative behaviors and shortcomings calmly and professionally.

Fair Labor Standards Act and Family and Medical Leave Act (FLSA/FLMA) - This session will provide leave reporting guidance for supervisors in the following areas: Overtime (FLSA), Special Compensatory Leave, Medical leave (FMLA), Leaves of Absence, Workers Compensation the Federal requirements (FLSA and FMLA), and the University of West Florida Policy (HR-18.00) and Standard Leave Reporting practices will be discussed as they apply to these leave situations.

Managing Unemployment Compensation - Learn and understand the unemployment compensation process. This process includes coverage, eligibility, benefits, and administration. Supervisors will learn and understand why documenting the correct employment separation reason is important, learn the legal definition of “voluntary resignation” and “misconduct,” the duration of Florida’s unemployment benefits, and understand the unemployment appeal process.

SUS Compliance and Florida Code of Ethics - This course provides an overview of the Florida Code of Ethics and basic compliance and ethics topics. These include; conflicts of interest, business relationships, gifts, financial reporting, and ethical decision-making.

Completing Action Sheets/Approving Time

PageUp (Job Description, Recruitment, and Onboarding) - This course is designed to teach users how to navigate the PageUp system used for job description management, job postings, applicant tracking, and onboarding. Participants will walk through how to create a job description, update or reclassify an existing job description, request to change a supervisor, create a recruitment, track applicants, create an offer letter in the PageUp, and how the Onboarding process will work.

Navigating a Sunshine Recruit - Learn and understand the requirements of the Florida Sunshine Law and how to successfully navigate a sunshine recruitment.  Participants will gain knowledge concerning the role and responsibilities of the hiring official and the committee to conduct a fair, equitable, and effective recruitment within the University’s equal opportunity policy requirements.
