Apply for SNAP
Information for Students Who Want to Apply for SNAP
Eligibility
Work Study - Students who are enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education and are eligible to participate in a state or federally financed work study program during the regular school year as determined by the institution of higher education are temporarily eligible for SNAP benefits provided they meet all other eligibility criteria.
Expected Family Contribution of $0 - Students who are enrolled at least half-time in an institution of higher education for the current academic year and have an EFC of $0 are eligible to receive food assistance, if all other requirements of eligibility are met. The EFC is calculated from information the student uses to complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA).
Verification and Procedures
After an application is submitted, in order to determine if a student meets one of the criteria above, contact must be made between DCF and student. If contact is not successful, the case may be pended.
Student’s statement can be used as verification for work study eligibility and an EFC of $0.
If questionable, DCF must pend the case to request the needed verification. Examples of verification include, but are not limited to, the Financial Aid Award Letter, the Student Aid Report (SAR), or documentation from the school
This policy is applied to pending applications received prior to January 16, 2021. Applicants who were denied appropriately, will need to reapply.
Current food assistance households with an excluded student enrolled at least half-time may report a household change to determine if the student meets the criteria to be included in the food assistance benefits.
Helpful Hints
On the application, it is suggested the student uses the following language in Box 11.3 Additional Information:
- “I am eligible for SNAP benefits because I am a zero EFC student, based on the information included in my Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), who is enrolled in at least six credit hours.”
OR
- “I am eligible for SNAP benefits because I am eligible to participate in federal work-study programs. I am a degree-seeking student in good academic standing who is enrolled in at least six credit hours and I have unmet financial need (based on the formula: Cost of Attendance (COA) minus EFC minus gift aid).
