Biography

Dr. Stutz, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has experience with various military and civilian defense organizations including the US Coast Guard, US Missile Defense Agency, and US Navy. His varied background includes private Research and Development, Naval Engineering, Advanced Technology development, and Hypersonic Ballistics. He holds several defense-related patents.

Degrees & Institutions

  • 2013-PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from The University of Alabama in Huntsville
  • 2003-MS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Alabama in Birmingham
  • 2001-BS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of South Alabama

Research

Actively conducting research into external ballistics and related technologies. This includes ballistic modeling of hypersonic projectiles for use of low-cost space launches as well as ballistic missile defense with hypersonic weapons. Also, the design of ultra-low drag projectiles and experimental techniques in ballistic measurements. Supporting technologies such as advanced aerodynamic modeling techniques are also of interest.
