Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

There are options available to you as an F-1 student to participate in internships both on and off campus. You should consult with an International Student and Scholar Services adviser prior to engaging in any type of work, internship or training.

What is CPT?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) gives F-1 students the opportunity to explore internships or other training opportunities. You work with both your International Student and Scholar Services advisor and academic advisor to plan training opportunities in your field of study.

Can I apply for any internship?

To comply with federal regulations, F-1 students need an internship directly related to their field of study. Your advisor must also verify that the CPT training is either required for completion of your degree or attached to a credit-bearing course.

How to Apply

The first step is to secure an internship that meets the CPT requirements. You can contact UWF Career Development & Community Engagement to discuss resume, cover letter and job search questions. You can also schedule an appointment to meet one-on-one with a career coach.

When you have a job offer, you and your academic advisor submit the Curricular Practical Training Form. Your international student advisor then issues you a new I-20 with CPT authorization.

For more information, contact your international student advisor or see the CPT Confluence page.
