Faculty Emeritus

The Emeritus designation recognizes the meritorious service of a faculty member upon retirement.

General Information

Faculty emeritus is an honorary title bestowed upon retired faculty members, recognizing their distinguished service and contributions to the University of West Florida. It is a way to acknowledge past achievements and allow faculty to maintain a connection to the University. Emeritus faculty may continue to be eligible to teach and serve on ad hoc college and University committees. Emeritus faculty also enjoy other rights and privileges provided to retired University faculty as stated in appropriate policies.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Tenured;
  • Associate Professor, Professor, Associate University Librarian, or University Librarian;
  • 10 years or more of service at UWF;
  • The Individual has made exceptional contributions in one or more of the areas of teaching, scholarship and creative projects, service, or administration. Periods of leave with pay will count toward years of service (e.g., sabbatical, professional development or administration leave;
  • The individual must be fully retired from UWF before the title of Emeritus can be bestowed.

Process for Consideration

Any retiring faculty member who believes that he or she is eligible may apply for emeritus consideration. Alternatively, with the individual’s consent, the Chair or any senior member of the Department may nominate the faculty member. A letter of application or nomination may be submitted to the appropriate College or Library Dean as early as the year before the academic year in which the faculty member or librarian is retiring from UWF (or the calendar year if the retirement is scheduled for December).

Evidence of the individual’s exceptional contributions to UWF, duly documented for a period of not less than ten years, must accompany the letter of application or nomination. The evidence that is provided by the candidate, or the department on the candidate’s behalf, will include a summative statement of the candidate’s contributions to UWF and the impact that these contributions have had on UWF related to its mission. A copy of the candidate’s most recent Curriculum Vitae should also be provided.

Emeritus applications or nominations are submitted for consideration during the spring semester. Faculty Emeritus Criteria, including deadlines for submission will be included here when available.
