Cost of Attendance

Cost of Attendance (COA) is an estimate of direct and indirect costs for two semesters. Actual costs vary depending on factors including personal choices.

COA is estimated from various components determined by federal regulations. COA includes direct costs for expenses billed directly by UWF to include tuition and fees, campus housing, and meal plans. COA also includes indirect costs, which are expenses students could accrue as the result of attending UWF. Actual costs may vary. The figures below are estimated based on two semesters (i.e., fall and spring) and are used to determine financial aid offers. COA adjustments can occur throughout the year depending on changes to include students’ actual tuition and fee charges, housing arrangements, and confirmed enrollment.

Students who have received 2024-2025 Financial Aid Offer Letters can view net costs (includes direct, billed charges and indirect, possible expenses) in their Financial Aid app in MyUWF. Select the College Financing Plan tab to review.

  1. Commuter means residing with parents or relatives without the responsibility of rent or a mortgage.
  2. The tuition amount is estimated on 12 credit hours per semester for undergraduate students and 6 credit hours per semester for graduate students.
  3. Food and housing costs could be billed depending on students’ personal decisions. On-campus housing and any associated meal plan costs are directly billed by UWF. Students living off-campus whether with family or independently receive the component based on estimated food and housing costs.
  4. Loan fee estimates are applicable to federal direct loans and are calculated from the average loan fee amounts based on annual loan limits for undergraduate and graduate students. Federal PLUS loan fees will be individually added based on a calculated average of $240 per semester on a case by case basis as students or parents are approved. The Federal PLUS loan fees were calculated separately based on annual averages accrued as Parent or Graduate PLUS borrowers. Non-Federal loan fees cannot be included per federal regulations.

Note: The component for the costs associated with obtaining a license, certification, or a first professional credential for students in a program that prepares them to enter a profession that requires such qualification will be automatically added by our office. The insertion of this component does not indicate additional funding is available nor will be offered.

See the additional details below regarding budget components and estimated calculations.

Tuition and mandatory fee estimates are calculated based on average costs between the fall and spring semesters combined. Once tuition and fees are assessed by the Student Accounts & Cashier’s Office each semester, actual charges on your budget will adjust accordingly.

Direct costs, which are directly billed by UWF, always include tuition and mandatory fees. Billable costs can also include campus housing, meal plan costs, and books, course materials, supplies and equipment depending on students’ personal choices.

Indirect costs, which are not directly billed by UWF, always include transportation, miscellaneous personal, and loan fee costs. Depending on students’ personal choices, indirect costs could also include food, housing, books, course materials, supplies and equipment.

Book and supplies costs are estimated using national averages of 4-year public institutions listed in the Education Data Initiative, adjusted for inflation.

On-campus housing estimates are calculated from the average of all available student housing options institutionally owned and operated. When calculating the food/meal estimates, mandatory meal plan costs are used and adjusted for inflation.

Off-campus housing estimates are calculated from current literature on local rental rates for double occupancy apartments. An allowance for utility costs is calculated based on estimated monthly expenses in the local area. When calculating the food/meal estimates, mandatory meal plan costs are used and adjusted for inflation.

The component for transportation costs is the same for all students regardless of living arrangements, which is based on federal guidance. Costs are calculated from the IRS Local Standards on costs for owning and operating one car taking into account the local area.

The component for miscellaneous personal costs is calculated from the IRS National Standards for Allowable Living Expenses and adjusted for the local area.

UWF uses period based budgeting (i.e., per semester), and every student receiving a financial aid offer is assigned a cost of attendance based on the following:

  • Grade Level Classification (Undergraduate or Graduate)
  • Residency (Florida, Alabama, or Non-Florida)
  • Enrollment Status (*Assumed Full-Time but adjusts based on confirmed enrollment)
  • Housing Arrangements (**With parent/relative, on-campus, off-campus)

*If your enrollment is less than full-time for an undergraduate or graduate student, expect your cost of attendance to be reduced which may also impact and reduce the amount of aid you were initially offered.

**Student housing arrangements are initially assigned based on your self-reported FAFSA response.

**Effective for the 2024-2025 aid year, the housing arrangement question was removed from the FAFSA. For new students, your housing arrangements are collected via your admissions application. For existing students, we will use your prior FAFSA data, or if you do not have a prior FAFSA, you will be contacted to collect your housing arrangements. Unless the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships is notified, student housing arrangements are not  changed after initial COA calculations.

Most additional funding sources including waivers and private scholarships are considered when calculating aid eligibility as regulated by federal regulations.

If you will not be receiving enough financial aid to cover all your billed charges for the semester or are unsure of the amount you will need to pay, please review your Transact account. Students can also view a breakdown of tuition and fees in their Cost by course app in MyUWF.

Students with billed charges exceeding accepted financial aid, must make payment arrangements with the Student Accounts & Cashier’s Office by the semester’s fee payment deadline to avoid a $100 late payment fee. The fee payment deadline is listed on the Academic Calendar and in Transact.

Students with financial aid accepted in excess of billed charges should receive a refund via BankMobile Disbursements.
