A Geographic Honor Society

Chapter History and Vision

GTU was first established in 1928 and became a national honor society in 1931. The Mu Pi Chapter of GTU began in February 2014. GTU aims to promote professional interests within ‌geography, provide academic and professional experience, further the importance of geography both culturally and as an investigative tool, promote student research and publications, ‌provide funding for graduate study and research, and to encourage others to apply geographic thinking and skills to better our understanding of the world around us.

Requirements for Membership:

Students must maintain a GPA of at least 3.3 in geography courses
Rank within 35% of their class
Have completed a minimum of 3 geography courses
Completed at least 3 semesters of full-time college course work.

Members can apply for 5 Gamma Theta Upsilon scholarships at $1,000 each .
Membership networking between geography students and faculty.

Individual Tutoring

GTU offers individual tutoring for many of the classes taught in the Earth and Environmental Sciences Department, including Physical Geology, Intro to Earth Science, Intro to Environmental Science, Geomorphology, Weather and Climate, and Intro to GIS.

Pot of Gold Tutoring

Pot of Gold (PoG) is a game show style tutoring program for Introduction to Earth Science students. UWF's chapter of Gamma Theta Upsilon (GTU), an International Geographic Honor Society, organizes this event each semester before each semester's Intro to Earth Science exams to review course material. Over the past semester, students who participate in PoG sessions have attained higher average exam scores compared to those students who did not attend PoG. Our top students do equally well whether they attend or not, recent data shows that PoG helps to improve the exam grades of those students who find the material a little more difficult to understand. Overall, PoG is raising the minimum scores of their students and assisting with better content understanding.
