UWF Explore Trips
UWF Explore Trips and the UWF Living Lab invite fifth-grade students on an immersive, hands-on science exploration designed to bring key biological concepts to life. This two-hour experience takes students beyond the classroom and into nature, where they will explore, experiment and discover the fascinating adaptations of plants and animals in their environments.

Explore Trips provides young learners with engaging, real-world experiences that align with Florida’s fifth-grade education standards and are designed to introduce new concepts not previously covered in earlier grades. Through guided exploration, interactive experiments and exposure to professional lab environments, students will gain a deeper understanding of biological processes and the impact of environmental changes on living organisms.
Learning Objectives
- Compare and contrast the function of organs and other physical structures of plants and animals, including humans.
- Compare and contrast adaptations displayed by animals and plants that enable them to survive in different environments, such as variations in life cycles, animal behaviors and physical characteristics.
- Describe how, when the environment changes, differences between individuals allow some plants and animals to survive and reproduce while others die or move to new locations.
Field Trip Itinerary
- Guided nature walk on the Edward Ball Nature Trail
- Biology Lab tour, introducing students to scientific tools and research practices
- A hands-on experiment in an outdoor lab where students will use LabQuest sensors to analyze plant photosynthesis and environmental adaptations
