If you're interested in a career in medical assisting, you've likely come across two popular career certifications: CCMA and CMAA. While both certifications demonstrate competency in medical assisting, they each have unique differences that can affect your career path Which one is right for you? Below is a comparison of the CCMA and CMAA certifications to help you decide.

CMAA vs CCMA: What is the difference?

The key difference between CMAA and CCMA certifications is the focus of their training and ultimate job responsibilities. A certified medical administrative assistant (CMAA)  primarily focuses on administrative tasks including managing patient records, handling insurance claims and scheduling appointments. Certified clinical medical assistants (CCMA) are more involved with direct patient care and clinical tasks like taking vital signs, administering medications and assisting with procedures.

What education or training is required to become a certified medical assistant?

To become a CCMA or a CMAA, individuals must also complete a medical assisting program from an accredited institution and pass an exam through a certifying organization such as the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

What is the employment outlook for medical assistants with these certifications?

The employment outlook for medical assistants with certifications is quite favorable. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of medical assistants is projected to grow 16 percent from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations. Both CMAA and CCMA certifications can increase employment opportunities for medical assistants.
