Consumer Credit Counseling Service of West Florida, Inc.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of West Florida Inc. was established to help families and individuals by offering financial counseling. In February 2018, University of West Florida received a $1.5 million gift from the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of West Florida Inc. to establish the Center for Financial Literacy at the UWF College of Business. The Center for Financial Literacy was established to continue the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of West Florida Inc.’s mission to enhance financial literacy and promote the wise use of credit in perpetuity.


Louis Maygarden

In Memory of Louis A. Maygarden, Jr.

The University of West Florida honored the legacy of Pensacola business leader, Louis A. Maygarden Jr. and recognized his lifelong commitment to the community along with his significant contributions to the profession of finance, by naming the Center for Financial Literacy at the College of Business after him. The Center was established in February 2018 and named: The Louis A. Maygarden, Jr. Center for Financial Literacy.

Louis Ameal Maygarden, Jr. was born on September 5, 1925 in Pensacola. Louis A. Maygarden Jr. grew up in Escambia County and graduated from Pensacola High School in 1943. Maygarden served in the Navy during World War II and returned to Pensacola after he was discharged from active duty. Maygarden then completed his bachelor’s degree in business administration at Mississippi College in Clinton.

Maygarden started a successful career in business and banking when he eventually returned to Pensacola. In his career, Maygarden served as a senior officer, director and advisor to several banks and holding companies. During his career, Maygarden Jr. maintained numerous professional affiliations. With concerns about the impact large amounts of debt can have on families and the broader community, he was instrumental in establishing Consumer Credit Counseling Services of West Florida, Inc. While serving as chairman, president and CEO of the Consumer Credit Counseling Services of West Florida, Inc. Maygarden Jr. advocated for sound borrowing practices and lending restraints.
