Why Study Communication at UWF?

Employers across all types of organizations need employees skilled in written and verbal communication.

UWF's communication program prepares you for a successful career in today’s communication professions. You will combine classroom instruction with hands-on learning, client-based projects, community engagement opportunities and internships.

What You Will Learn

You will choose a curriculum that best suits your interests and career goals by mixing and matching courses from three concentrations of study: Advertising, Public Relations, and Social Media; Communication; and Digital Storytelling and Journalism.

Our program blends academic theory with project-oriented classroom assignments and hands-on experience to help you become a skilled professional. You will develop communication skills with personable instructors who foster a supportive climate while emphasizing quality work and high standards.

You will also have ample opportunities to flex the skills you've learned in the classroom in an internship and in our student organizations: Speech and Debate, Club Ad, Film Club, Florida Public Relations Association and The Voyager student newspaper. Our students have won the State Advertising Championship seven times, more than 100 ADDY Awards for Creative Excellence and a National Forensic Association Championship for speech and debate. Our students have also received numerous accolades from the Southeast Journalism Conference and been recognized multiple times with the Florida Public Relations Association's Golden Image Award.

We also offer a General Communication minor, a Social Media Communication Certificate, as well as two specialized communication minors: Strategic Communication for the Sciences and Leadership Communication for students majoring in other disciplines who want to boost their skills.

UWF programs offered at the Pensacola campus or UWF Emerald Coast may require online courses. Discuss the program requirements and planning with your academic advisor.

Concentrations

The Advertising, Public Relations, and Social Media track builds from a core of integrated advertising, public relations, and social media strategies and tactics. Students in this track choose from concentrations in either Advertising or Public Relations while earning a certificate in Social Media Communication.

Advertising, Public Relations, and Social Media Courses

The Communication track provides students the flexibility to build their own areas of specialization according to their professional goals. The Communication Specialist concentration explores the contexts and professional skills needed for public, private, or non-profit industries, while the Communication Studies concentration allows students to draw knowledge from each of the tracks and concentrations.

Communication Courses

The Digital Storytelling and Journalism track engages in the theory, writing, production, and practice of journalistic, documentary, and cinematic storytelling in a converged media environment. Students can choose between Multimedia Journalism or Digital Cinema and Film concentrations.
