Preparing for a Career Event
The goals of a career event are to expand your network, build lasting connections and learn about companies. Use this opportunity to make a strong impression and gain valuable insights.
- Research: Review employers on Handshake to find those aligned with your goals.
- Prepare questions: Prepare a short list of thoughtful, open-ended questions about company culture and development opportunities to initiate conversations and demonstrate your preparedness and motivation.
- Create a strong resume: Visit Career Development and Community Engagement in Building 19 to have your resume evaluated by one of our career coaches and make sure you print several copies to bring to the career event.
- Practice introducing yourself: Create a one-minute commercial with a career coach that highlights your major, experience and fit with the company and role
- Dress for success: Even if it is not an interview, dress professionally for any interaction with an employer. Your attire should be appropriate and well-fitting, but it should not take center stage. Refer to Level 3 of our Career Development Guide for attire examples.
- Be positive and confident: First impressions in networking are crucial and include a firm handshake, eye contact, a head nod and, most importantly, a smile.
- Ask thoughtful, open-ended questions: These are questions with more than a simple “yes” or “no” response. Refer to Level 3 of our Career Development Guide for examples.
- Take notes: Take notes during conversations to improve follow-up and recall details for job applications or career event connections.
- Request a business card from employers: Make sure you have the contact details of everyone you speak with so you can follow up after the event.
- Review and organize your notes: When following up with employers, reference past discussions, address their inquiries and stay organized to avoid mixing up conversations.
- Apply to an open job or internship: Submit your application if you have discussed an opportunity with the employer. Check
Handshake for posted positions and apply to those of interest. - Send a thank-you email: Send a follow-up email within 24 hours, thanking the employer, referencing a specific topic you discussed and sharing your next steps, like submitting a job application.
