Building Capacity for Greater Community Impact
August 24, 2026 | Heather LeBlanc

Every nonprofit begins with a mission to make a difference. But transforming that mission into lasting community impact requires more than passion alone. It takes thoughtful leadership, strategic communication and the ability to secure resources that keep the important work moving forward.
Nonprofit professionals wear many hats. They inspire teams, build relationships with donors and community partners, navigate organizational change and make difficult decisions that affect the people and causes they serve. As organizations continue to face increasing demands and competition for funding, developing strong leadership skills has never been more important.
Designed specifically for current and aspiring nonprofit professionals, the Effective Leadership for Purpose-Driven Organizations workshop from UWF’s Department of Communication is a professional development workshop suited for nonprofit leaders, managers, board members and aspiring executives. Led by University faculty, the workshop explores practical leadership strategies that participants can immediately apply within their organizations.
“Local nonprofits are doing incredible, life-changing work but often suffer from being ‘the best-kept secrets in town,’” said Christian Garman, Assistant Professor and Effective Leadership Workshop Facilitator. “This program will change that. Two important parts of the series include media relations and advocacy storytelling. Attendees will learn how to amplify their reach with stories that matter. Knowing how to command the narrative can lead to attracting more donors, recruiting strong volunteers, and building community trust.
Topics include relationship and team building, leading through change, mentoring staff and volunteers, board development, branding, media relations and social media strategy. leadership role or looking to strengthen an established organization, you’ll gain the skills to build stronger teams, communicate more effectively and increase community impact.
Funding the Nonprofit Vision
The most effective leaders need resources to turn vision into action. For many nonprofits, fall marks one of the busiest periods of the year for grant funding opportunities, with numerous private foundations, corporate giving programs and community organizations announcing or closing application deadlines before year’s end. Spring often brings another significant wave of funding opportunities, particularly in education, government and community-based initiatives. Organizations that prepare in advance are better positioned to compete for these highly sought-after awards.
UWF Continuing Education’s online Grant Writing course provides a practical foundation for developing competitive grant proposals. Participants learn how to identify funding opportunities, interpret Requests for Proposals (RFPs), develop measurable objectives, build realistic budgets and craft persuasive narratives that align with a funder’s priorities. Throughout the course, students apply what they learn by developing a grant proposal tailored to a real funding opportunity of their choice, creating a valuable resource they can put to use immediately.
These two professional development opportunities reflect that successful nonprofit organizations depend on both strong leadership and sustainable funding. Leaders who can inspire people, communicate a compelling vision and secure financial support are better equipped to create meaningful, lasting change in their communities.
Whether you’re preparing for the upcoming grant season, advancing your nonprofit career, looking to strengthen the organization you serve or developing the leadership skills needed to guide a purpose-driven organization, investing in professional development today can help create stronger organizations and stronger communities tomorrow.
