Congressional Districts as a Geography

There are many ways of looking at demographics geographically. One interesting geography to examine is the congressional district. Because they are designed to represent equal numbers of the adult population, they provide an interesting framework at looking a population differences within state boundaries.

There are 27 congressional districts in Florida. The map shows the wide variation of physical areas encompassed by the districts in an effort to have them contain equal populations. For the 115th Congress, these populations ranged from a high of over 850,000 in District 9 to just over 725,000 in District 2.

While the population size may be similar, economically and demographically the areas are very different. We ranked a few of the many variables available and looked to see how we in District 1 compared to the rest of the state. Our source was EASI Demographics. We have provided the rankings for first and last Congressional Districts, as well as where District 1 falls. When District 1 is ranked #1 in a category, we share the District that most closely follows us. The categories are presented in order from where District 1 is ranked the highest (number in armed forces) to the lowest.
