Annual Conference and FCDI Debate Tournament

Each year the Academy of American Civic Republicanism hosts a major public conference featuring scholarly panels and the Florida Civics and Debate Initiative (FCDI) high-school debate tournament (approximately 150 participants).


Call for Papers and Panel Proposals

The Academy of American Civic Republicanism invites proposals for papers and panels for its inaugural conference:

The Idea of a Republic: Past, Present, and Future

February 5–6, 2027
University of West Florida | Pensacola, Florida

The conference will explore the republic as a distinct regime type from its classical origins to its modern expressions. We welcome proposals that engage the historical, philosophical, constitutional, economic, and civic dimensions of republican government.

Submissions from scholars in history, political science, philosophy, economics, law, classics, and related disciplines are especially encouraged, though proposals from all relevant fields are welcome.

Suggested Topics

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Classical republicanism
  • Renaissance republican thought
  • The American Founding and constitutionalism
  • Civic virtue and citizenship
  • Liberty, commerce, and self-government
  • Republicanism and democratic institutions
  • Comparative republican traditions
  • Federalism and constitutional design
  • The future of republican government

Individual Paper Proposals

Please submit the following:

  • A 250–300 word abstract
  • A provisional paper title
  • A brief biographical statement (approximately 100 words)

Panel Proposals

We welcome proposals for organized panels. Panel submissions should include:

  • A panel title
  • A brief description of the panel's theme
  • The names and institutional affiliations of all proposed participants
  • A 250–300 word abstract and provisional title for each paper
  • A brief biographical statement for each participant

Important Dates

  • Submission Deadline: October 10, 2026
  • Notification of Acceptance: October 15, 2026
  • Conference: February 5–6, 2027
