About the Academy

About the Academy of American Civic Republicanism

Established by the UWF Board of Trustees in December 2025, the Academy is dedicated to cultivating thoughtful, engaged citizens through a curriculum grounded in the moral and political traditions that shape the American regime. The term “Academy” reflects a primary emphasis on teaching and formation, rather than research alone. Rooted in the civic republican tradition—whose origins extend to ancient Greece and Rome and were renewed during the Renaissance—the Academy emphasizes citizenship as an active, participatory responsibility ordered toward the common good.

Our Vision

We balance the two great traditions of the American Founding—civic republicanism (active citizenship and care for the common good) and classical liberalism (individual rights and liberty)—to produce informed citizens equipped to sustain republican institutions as described in our state and federal constitutions. Through primary-source study, Socratic inquiry, and place-based learning at Historic Pensacola, we revive robust citizenship for the 21st century.
