Additional Resources

The Gulf Coast Digital History Project is made possible through a collaborative network of institutions and organizations that promote the maritime history and heritage of the northern Gulf Coast. Alabama Review

The Alabama Review is a peer-reviewed academic journal that presents the best of scholarship on the history of the state. Published by the Alabama Historical Association in cooperation with the University of Mobile, the Review covers a wide range of topics: pre-Revolutionary War colonization, Native Americans, state and regional politics, the Confederacy and the Civil War, Reconstruction, industrialization, education, the civil rights movement, and religion are only some of the subjects you will find in the pages of the Review.”

Civil War History

The Journal of the Civil War Era is published by UNC Press in association with the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center. It publishes the most creative new work on the many issues raised by slavery, the sectional crisis, war, emancipation, Reconstruction, and memory of the country’s signal conflict, while bringing fresh understanding to the struggles that defined the period, and by extension, the course of American history in the nineteenth century.

East Texas Historical Journal

"The constitution of the East Texas Historical Association stipulates that The Association shall publish at least once a year a historical journal of high quality, to be known as the East Texas Historical Journal, and may publish other items on occasion when judged by the Board of Directors to be worthy and appropriate.”

The Florida Historical Quarterly

"The Florida Historical Quarterly is the academic journal published four times per year by the Florida Historical Society in cooperation with the Department of History at the University of Central Florida. Each issue features peer-reviewed articles focusing on a wide variety of topics related to Florida history."

Gulf South Historical Review

The Gulf South Historical Review, formerly the Gulf Coast Historical Review, focuses on the history of the coastal region from Florida's Big Bend to Texas.”

 Historical Archaeology

Historical Archaeology is the scholarly journal of The Society for Historical Archaeology (SHA) and the leading journal in the study of the archaeology of the modern era. The journal publishes articles on a broad range of historic and archaeological areas of interests such as slavery, gender, race, ethnicity, social class, globalization, industry, landscapes, material culture, battlefields, and much more.”

Journal of Northeast Texas Archaeology

Journal of Texas Archeology and History.org has been established to protect, preserve and promote archeology and history through public outreach, publishing, and distribution.”

 Louisiana History Journal

Louisiana History is a scholarly publication of the Louisiana Historical Association (LHA). Published quarterly, the journal began in 1960 and is consistently ranked as one of the top state-level historical journals in the country. Issues of the journal contain award-winning secondary articles, notes and documents of primary source material, book reviews, profiles of historical architecture, biographical sketches, and much more.”

Southeastern Archaeology

Southeastern Archaeology is a refereed journal that publishes works concerning the archaeology of southeastern North America and neighboring regions. It welcomes articles from all time periods, from the Paleoindian to recent history, and a broad range of interdisciplinary perspectives.”

Southern Studies

Southern Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal of the South is a peer reviewed journal published twice a year from the Southern Studies Institute. The Department of Criminal Justice, History, and Social Sciences at Northwestern State University houses the institute.”

ALABAMA

Alabama Historical Association 

“Founded in 1947, the Alabama Historical Association is the oldest statewide historical society in Alabama. The AHA provides opportunities for meaningful engagement with the past through publications, meetings, historical markers, and other programs.”

Historic Mobile Preservation Society

“Our mission is to serve Mobile County by advocating for the preservation of its historic resources, promoting heritage tourism, and providing educational opportunities that explore its rich history.”

Apalachicola Area Historical Society

“The Apalachicola Area Historical Society is a nonprofit organization devoted to preserving and promoting the area's history and preservation efforts.”

Citrus County Historical Society

“The Citrus County Historical Society, Inc. (CCHS, INC.) was originally formed in 1963, and incorporated in 1979. Operating as a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation, it accepts tax-deductible donation in the active pursuit to "preserve and further the knowledge of the history and pre-history of Citrus County and nearby areas.”

Florida Historical Society

“The Florida Historical Society is the oldest cultural organization in the state, and the only state-wide historical society.”

The Historical Society of Bay County

“The purpose of the Society shall be to serve present and future generations by collecting, preserving and sharing artifacts, documents and images pertaining to the unique culture and history of Bay County and its environs, assist in the preservation of historic sites within the county; and to operate the Bay County History Museum as an educational resource for the public, a repository for its collections and a place to present exhibits and educational programs.”

Santa Rosa Historical Society

“The Santa Rosa Historical Society is dedicated to the identification, documentation and preservation of Santa Rosa County, Florida’s unique historic legacy.”

Tampa Bay History Center

Tarpon Springs Historical Society

“The purpose of the Tarpon Springs Area Historical Society, Inc. is to promote the research and preservation of artifacts, relics and historical points of interest in the Tarpon Springs area; to provide educational and cultural development; and to preserve these materials and information for posterity.”

Wakulla County Historical Society

“The Wakulla County Historical Society was founded in October 1991 to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the heritage of Wakulla County and the surrounding area.”

LOUISIANA

Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies/Southeast Louisiana Historical Association

The Center for Southeast Louisiana Studies preserves and promotes the history and the cultures of Louisiana's Florida Parishes, southwestern Mississippi, and surrounding areas through scholarly research, lectures, and publishing.”

Louisiana Historical Society

Biloxi Historical Society
