Biography
Dr. Willie Tubbs is an assistant professor in the Department of Communication.
His expertise in communications is broad and includes interactive media, message design, journalism and media relations. Tubbs’ primary area of research is media history with a focus on 20th Century American media.
In addition to his academic and teaching career, Tubbs has worked as a journalist, editor, and athletics media relations professional. He has served as adviser for The Voyager, the student-run newspaper of the University of West Florida, since 2017. In 2020, Tubbs was named Faculty Athletic Representative. In this role, he serves as a liaison between UWF faculty and athletics, participates in athletics compliance, and represents the University and its faculty at the NCAA and Gulf South Conference levels.
Tubbs has served in numerous volunteer capacities. He is an active member of the American Journalism Historians Association, serving in numerous capacities for that organization. Tubbs is committed to working with undergraduate and graduate students who wish to pursue conference presentations and publication in the area of media history.
Since his arrival UWF, Tubbs has worked to expand the sports-related course offerings within the Department of Communication. He has developed courses in sports reporting and athletics media relations, and has worked with a team of University faculty and administrators to develop a sports agency practicum in which students help UWF Athletics achieve its communication goals.
Tubbs strives to provide numerous enriching educational experiences for all of his students, including trips to conferences, engaging guest speakers, and partnerships with real-world clients.
Degrees & Institutions
Tubbs received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Louisiana College, master’s degree in interactive media from Quinnipiac University, and a doctorate in mass communication from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Special Interests
Tubbs enjoys spending time with Mary Beth, his wife; Patten, their son; and Scarlet, a Pomeranian. He is also a fan of traveling, reading classic works of fiction, working in his vegetable garden, and watching any number of sports.
