Sallie Shipman

Biography

Sallie J. Shipman, EdD, MSN, RN, CNL, NHDP-BC, CNE, Lecturer, teaches nursing students in the Traditional BSN Program.  Dr. Shipman has been a nurse for over 30 years and completed her BSN in 1991 from the University of Alabama (UA). In 2008, she completed her MSN from the University of Alabama with a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) focus. In 2014, she completed her EdD in the Instructional Leadership for the Nurse Educator from University of Alabama which was a dual program between the Capstone College of Nursing and College of Education. Dr. Shipman has experience in both the ICU and emergency room. She spent more than 18 years working for the Alabama Department of Public Health where she specialized in perinatal outreach, prenatal care, and since 2002, emergency preparedness.

 

Dr. Shipman currently teaches evidence-based practice and maternal child health. She became a full-time nurse educator in August 2011 and has experience teaching in prelicensure and graduate courses. She has taught in the nurse educator track and has extensive experience teaching community/public health and fundamentals of nursing practice.

 

Dr. Shipman’s scholarly research focus is public health nursing education with an emphasis on healthcare emergency preparedness, social determinants of health (SDH), experiential learning and theory. An article based on her dissertation study was featured as a Continuing Nursing Education article in the Journal of Continuing Education in Nursing (February 2016) and was recognized as article of the year.

Dr. Shipman currently holds the following board certifications:
  • Certified Nurse Educator (CNE), National Commission for Certifying Agencies
  • Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL), Commission on Nurse Certification
  • National Healthcare Disaster Certification (NHDP-BC), American Nurses Credentialing Center

In addition to her professional association and organization memberships, Dr. Shipman is a member of the Society for the Advancement of Disaster Nursing (SADN). She currently serves on a SADN research team which is exploring the experiences of nurse executives during disasters.
