Biography
Dr. Prasanthi Ilankoon, PhD, MPH, MSc, RN, Lecturer, teaches courses in evidence-based
professional nursing practice, mental health nursing, and population health. She teaches at both undergraduate and graduate levels. She is passionate about advancing nursing education through evidence-based teaching and preparing future nurses to critically evaluate and apply research evidence to clinical practice.
Her scholarship centers on evidence-based practice, nursing education, women’s health, health promotion, community/ population health, mental health, and emerging areas of digital health. Her scholarly work includes both quantitative and qualitative research. For her PhD thesis, she developed an educational intervention for Family Health Care Workers focused on women’s health issues, informed by mixed-methods data, and evaluated its effectiveness using a non- randomized controlled trial. Her scholarly work has been published in peer reviewed journals.

She contributes to the nursing and public health scholarly community as a peer reviewer for several leading peer-reviewed journals, including BMC Nursing, BMC Public Health, and Nurse Education Today, and as an editorial board member of the Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare, which is indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded. She has also served as a reviewer for numerous academic conferences and has continuously served as an abstract reviewer for the International Council of Nurses (ICN) Congress since 2024.
Prior to joining the University of West Florida, Dr. Ilankoon served as a Population Health
Coordinator at the Clara M. Robinson Foundation in Connecticut, a behavioral health nurse, and a Senior Lecturer in Nursing at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka. As a lifelong learner, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and PhD from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka, a Master of Science in Integrated Health Sciences from
Kristianstad University in Sweden, and a Master of Public Health from the University of New
Haven.
She is a member of the Upsilon Kappa Sigma Chapter of Sigma. She looks forward to advancing nursing education and pursuing opportunities to continue her public health research in the Pensacola region. In her free time, Dr. Ilankoon enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, and exploring new places.
