Rights and Responsibilities
As a student with documented disabilities at UWF who is registered with SAR, you have rights and responsibilities that help ensure equal access to the University of West Florida’s programs, services and activities.
Understanding these rights and responsibilities can help you navigate the accommodation process and work collaboratively with SAR and the university.
Student Rights
- Equal access to educational and co-curricular programs, services, and activities facilitated by UWF.
- Equal opportunity to learn and receive reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services as supported by their documentation, which do not represent a fundamental alteration of the essential educational components of the academic programs.
- Confidential treatment of disability-related records housed at Student Accessibility Resources (SAR). Only persons working at or in collaboration with SAR have access to these records. Some level of disclosure to faculty may be necessary to coordinate requested accommodation(s). Disability documentation submitted to SAR is not part of the student's permanent academic record.
Student Responsibilities
- Meet qualifications and maintain academic, technical, and institutional standards for courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities.
- Provide current and appropriate disability documentation in accordance with established UWF guidelines.
- Initiate and follow established procedures for obtaining reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services in a timely manner.
- Complete the Semester Accommodation Request Form at the beginning of each new semester.
Initiate a meeting with SAR staff to request additional accommodations (may require additional documentation to support the request). - Communicate with SAR staff about any concerns regarding the implementation of accommodations in the classroom.
- Review and follow the guidelines for approved academic accommodations.
SAR Responsibilities
- Review supporting documentation and confirm the student's disability.
- Meet with the student regarding academic barriers and possible accommodations.
- Work collaboratively with the student and faculty to address academic barriers.
- Notify faculty of the approved accommodations.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information and disability status.
Faculty Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the student and SAR.
- Facilitate approved academic accommodations in the classroom.
- Contact SAR immediately if an approved accommodation could be considered a fundamental alteration of course requirements.
- Provide accessible course materials.
- Faculty are not required to lower or modify course standards for accommodation purposes.
