Joyce Southard

Biography

Joyce Southard began working at the University of West Florida as an academic advisor in 2001. After years of advising students, she began to consider what might be her next step toward personal and professional fulfillment and decided to pursue her passion for history.

After taking some undergraduate history courses, Ms. Southard joined UWF's Public History program. She progressed steadily through her program as a non-traditional student, graduating in 2021. Ms. Southard's research has focused on various topics relating to the history of Florida and the South, including the origins of public education in the state and the history of the post-Reconstruction Southern economy.

In 2022, Ms. Southard began teaching classes as an adjunct and joined the department as a full-time faculty member in Fall 2024.

Degrees & Institutions

Southard received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in public history from the University of West Florida. 

Research

Pensacola's colonial history, education in Florida during Reconstruction, the economic history of the new South, labor and class in the South.
