Joyce Southard

Biography

Ms. Joyce Southard, instructor of history, teaches courses in American history, local history, Southern history, and the Vietnam War. 

Ms. Southard began working at the University of West Florida as an academic advisor in 2001. After years of advising students, she began to look ahead to some personal and professional goals. As a non-traditional student, she joined UWF's graduate program in Public History and made steady progress toward earning the degree. She began teaching as an adjunct after graduating and joined the department as a full-time faculty member in 2024. 
In addition to teaching courses, Ms. Southard coordinates the department's internship program. In this capacity, she draws from a diverse selection of opportunities and works to connect history majors with internships that best align with their goals and interests.

Degrees & Institutions

Ms. Southard received a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in public history from the University of West Florida.

Research

Pensacola's colonial history, education in Florida during Reconstruction, the economic history of the new South, labor and class in the South.
