Biography

 

Peter Steenblik is the Director of Choral Activities at the University of West Florida and the Artistic Director of the Choral Society of Pensacola.  

He is the President-Elect for the Florida chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, recipient of the 2023 FMEA College Music Educator of the Year award, and the 2022 FVA Service Award, a manifestation of the impact his work has had in the state and beyond.  An active presenter, adjudicator, and clinician, recent appearances have included the Xi’an International Choral Festival, the Chengdu Children’s Choir Festival, the Oklahoma Summer Arts Institute, the Festival Singers of Florida Indonesian Tour, various ACDA Division Conferences, the Florida Vocal Association State MPA and Summer Convention, Florida Music Educators Association Conference, Utah Music Educators Association State Festival, Mississippi High School Activities Association, Alabama Vocal Association, and ACDA state conferences in Florida, Georgia, and Utah.  He has served as the head of choral activities for the Utah Music Educators Association and on the Utah ACDA board as R & S Chair for Men's Choruses.  He conducted the 2023 Florida All-state Reading Chorus, and various honor choirs in Florida, Utah, Alabama, and Tennessee.  Steenblik’s choirs recently performed by invitation at the Florida ACDA Conference in Orlando and the ACDA Southern Division Conference with the Mobile Symphony Orchestra.  Additional collaborations include the Tabernacle Choir, Utah Symphony, Ballet West, Women’s Chorus of Dallas, Pensacola Opera, and Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

An active baritone, Steenblik is a former member of the Tabernacle Choir where he also made frequent solo appearances.  With additional training in musical theater, he often provides music direction for community productions.  He is an experienced handbell director, composer, and clinician, a four-time assistant director for the Utah Ambassadors of Music European tour, and spent six years in New York with the Louis August Jonas Foundation, a scholarship-based leadership-training program for international youth.  He served a two-year LDS mission to the Philippines and is the former music director at First Christian Church in Lewisville, Texas.  

Previous appointments include Chorus Master for Pensacola Opera, Director of Women's Chorus at the University of North Texas, and Director of Choral Music at Jordan High School (Salt Lake City).  He holds a DMA in conducting and vocal pedagogy from the University of North Texas, and degrees in conducting and choral music education from the University of Utah.  Pensacola has become his home where he regularly spends time with toes in the sand.  www.petersteenblik.com
