Biography

Dr. Leonid Yanovskiy, professor and director of strings and orchestra.

Yanovskiy is an acclaimed violinist, violist and conductor who has captivated audiences around the world with his luminous and energetic performances.

Throughout his career, he has performed on the stages of Lincoln Center, Chicago Orchestra, Boston Symphony Halls, the Kennedy Center and Metropolitan Opera. He has performed recitals throughout the world, including Brazil, Denmark, France, Israel, Korea, Russia, Germany and Italy. 

In 2015 - 2017, he performed two recitals at the Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall in New York, as well as solo recitals in Chicago, Illinois, Germany,  and Italy. He currently serves as Faculty and Outstanding Guest Artist at the InterHarmony International Music Festival,  principal violinist at the Washington Square Music Festival in New York, and concertmaster of the Pensacola and Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestras.

At UWF, he teaches violin, viola, string quartet and orchestra, helping students become well-rounded performers. His students win national orchestra auditions, and national, regional and state solo and chamber music competitions. They have been accepted to the Encore and Meadowmount Schools of Music, and graduate programs, including Juilliard School, Cleveland Institute of Music, Florida State University, University of North Texas and Maryland.

Before coming to UWF in 2000, Yanovskiy taught at the Moscow Gnessin Academy of Music. He was principal violinist with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra Northern Crown, Goliard Chamber Ensemble, and Philadelphia Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra. He was also a violinist with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s and the American Symphony.

Degrees & Institutions

Yanovskiy received degrees from the Moscow Gnessin Academy of Music in Russia, studied at the American Conservatoire at Fontenbleau in France, and earned a doctorate in musical arts from Rutgers University.
