Joseph T. Spaniola


Dr. Joseph T. Spaniola, professor and director of music theory and jazz studies, teaches composition, arranging, orchestration and music analysis.

Spaniola is an award-winning composer who is on a passionate quest to engage the hearts and minds of audiences and performers through the communicative powers of music.

He has spent 37 years as an active composer, arranger, conductor and producer. He has composed works for band, orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, voice, choir and electronic tape. His award-winning compositions have been performed and recorded by ensembles all over the world, including Europe, Japan, South America, China, Taiwan and Singapore. He has worked on projects with a wide variety of artists, ensembles and institutions across the U.S., Europe and Japan, such as Reneé Fleming, Sammy Nestico, Frank Sinatra, Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), the Detroit Symphony Orchestra Brass Quintet, the Boston Brass, Paul Compton and the White House Historical Association.

His works have premiered or presented at conferences and festivals hosted by the College Music Society, American Bandmasters Association, International Trombone Association, International Clarinet Association, the Midwest Clinic, and the Tuba/Euphonium Conference.

In 2016, he received the Silver Medal from the Global Music Awards for his composition, “Blow, Eastern Winds,” and was selected as the Commissioned Composer for the Florida State Music Teachers Association.

Before joining UWF in 2007, Spaniola was the chief composer and arranger for the U.S. Air Force Academy Band.

Degrees & Institutions

He received a Bachelor of Music in theory and composition and a master’s in composition from Michigan State University, and a doctorate in composition from the University of North Texas.
