Biography
Dr. Thomas Groth, professor of advertising and Professor Emeritus in the Department of Communication, taught advertising methods, advertising creative direction, and advertising strategy and tactics.
Groth is an award-winning advertising consultant with 43 years of combined experience working in academe and as an international media director for a large New York City advertising agency.
As head of the UWF advertising program and advisor to the American Advertising Federation (AAF) of university chapters, he led UWF student agencies to 10 AAF National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) district championships. UWF is the only institution in the country to win the NSAC National championship a record-breaking four times (1986, 1989, 1996 and 1997). Groth and the advertising team’s success were recognized in a House Resolution of the State of Florida House of Representatives.
His academic work has been featured in many publications, from Advertising Age to Ad Week to several advertising texts. He has won many professional ADDY awards, the industry’s largest and most competitive contest for creative excellence. His dedication to teaching has been recognized by the University: he received several Distinguished Teaching Awards, Excellence in Academic Advising Award and Professorial Excellence Program Award.
Groth, who is a member and former chair of the American Advertising Federation Academic Committee, has served on the boards of advertising associations, including the American Advertising Foundation and the Pensacola Bay Area Advertising Federation.
Degrees & Institutions
Before coming to UWF in 1988, he was a professor and head of the Advertising Sequence at Iowa State University for 13 years. Groth has a bachelor’s degree in advertising design from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in advertising from the University of Illinois.
