Help Your Student Succeed
This page provides information for families of students on how they can help their student succeed at college. Included are links to external resources on the subject.
Few transitions in life are totally seamless. Shifting from high school or community college to a four-year comprehensive university like UWF can bring about some difficult adjustments, including academic ones. But there are plenty of things you can discuss as a family in advance of your student's arrival to UWF that will significantly ease their academic transition.
How Family Members Can Help
- Encourage your student to reflect on their learning style and identify areas where they may need support.
- Support your student in building relationships with advisors and faculty.
- Maintain open communication about academic progress, goals, and career interests.
- Celebrate successes and encourage help-seeking when challenges arise.
- Encourage involvement in student organizations to build connections and develop skills.
- Help your student prepare for conversations by brainstorming questions, rather than stepping in on their behalf.
- Support their ability to accept and grow from feedback.
- Stay connected with UWF Family Programs for additional resources and opportunities to engage.
You Know Your Student
Families often notice changes first. Stay attentive to shifts in your student’s behavior, emotions, or social engagement that may indicate difficulty adjusting to college life.
If concerns arise, talk with your student and encourage them to seek support. UWF Counseling & Psychological Services offers a range of services to help students navigate stress, transitions, and personal challenges.
