Through the French Language and Culture undergraduate certificate program, you will develop French linguistic and cultural fluency, preparing you to become an informed global citizen and adaptable professional ready to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
Why Study French at UWF?
French is spoken globally by over 275 million people across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and parts of Asia, and plays a vital role in international diplomacy, global business, education, and humanitarian work.
Studying French at UWF opens the door not only to linguistic fluency and deeper appreciation of Francophone cultures around the world, but also brings that global perspective close to home. Pensacola, known as the "City of Five Flags," has a rich history being under the rule of five distinct national governments throughout its history including France. Evidence of French influence still exists in the some historic homes and buildings that reflect the French Creole architecture style.
UWF is also located just a few hours east of Louisiana, a region shaped by French influence still present today from Saint Martin Parish, home to the largest French-speaking population in the U.S by percentage of speakers, to the vibrant cultural landscape of Acadiana, a region in South Louisiana known for its Cajun and Creole traditions.
At UWF, the French Language and Culture Certificate combines foundational language training with real-world cultural engagement. Students gain essential communication skills for navigating real-life situations in French while critically examining how Francophone cultures intersect with, and differ from, American culture.
Whether you’re aiming to live and work in a Francophone country or collaborate with French-speaking communities, this program is ideal for students seeking international opportunities such as study abroad or working with international organizations such as Peace Corps or Doctors Without Borders.
What You Will Learn
The French Language and Culture Certificate program at UWF builds both confidence and competence in French communication while offering a deeper understanding of Francophone cultures. From the first introduction to the language, students begin developing practical skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. As proficiency grows, so does the ability to express complex ideas clearly and accurately in French, with continued refinement of grammar and vocabulary.
Interactive and multimedia-based coursework provides exposure to real-world French used in everyday and professional contexts. Alongside language development, the curriculum encourages cultural exploration, highlighting the values, traditions, and contributions of French-speaking communities across the globe.
The program culminates with a capstone project on a Francophone cultural topic, delivered entirely in French. This final presentation demonstrates not only French language proficiency, but also a meaningful understanding of French cultural dynamics at play.
