The graduate Civic Literacy certificate is designed to introduce graduate students to the philosophical underpinnings of the American constitutional order. Every political community presupposes something that is shared, something that is held in common. The content covered in these courses will help students become more familiar with the principles and controversies that lie at the heart of contemporary American politics.
Why Study Civic Literacy at UWF?
The graduate Civic Literacy Certificate offers a focused, discussion-driven exploration of the ideas and institutions that shape American public life. Students engage with the writings and debates that define the nation’s constitutional order, including influential works such as Democracy in America and The Federalist Papers, building a deeper understanding of American principles in both national and comparative contexts.
What You Will Learn
You will develop a sophisticated understanding of the philosophical foundations and institutional realities of American politics. Study begins with the evolution of the American political order, tracing developments from the colonial and revolutionary periods through the debates surrounding the drafting and ratification of the Constitution. Engagement with primary sources and founding-era arguments provides direct insight into the ideas that shaped the nation.
You will also gain a strong grasp of the structure and dynamics of modern American government, including the roles of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, as well as elections, political parties, representation, and civic engagement. The program emphasizes critically evaluating competing theories and interpretations of how these systems operate in practice.
