Alex Smith serves as Director of External Affairs at the University of West Florida, where he spearheads collaboration and engagement efforts with public and private stakeholders, advises the Office of the President, and advances the University’s strategic vision and master plan.

In this role, Smith leads UWF’s governmental relations program, shaping legislative priorities and advocating on behalf of the University at the federal, state, and local levels. He oversees major presidential initiatives aligned with UWF’s strategic goals and supports the Board of Trustees and University-affiliated boards. He also cultivates partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, and other educational institutions to foster programs, internships, and research collaboration across Northwest Florida.

Prior to joining UWF, Smith served as Special Assistant to the Mayor of Pensacola from November 2022 to March 2025. There, he managed over $75 million in appropriations and grants and served as the city’s legislative and constituent liaison. He also facilitated high-profile development projects, assisted in land-use and financing agreements, and coordinated with government agencies and community partners.

Earlier in his career, Smith held campaign leadership roles, including Campaign Manager for D.C. Reeves’s historic mayoral victory. He also held legislative and legal staff positions at both the state and municipal levels, including with the Executive Office of the Florida Governor and as a legislative intern.

As Director of External Affairs, Smith is committed to growing UWF’s footprint, developing regional partnerships, and contributing to long-term economic and educational growth. A strategic connector and legislative advocate, he brings municipal governance experience, campaign leadership, and a future-forward business perspective to higher education.

Smith earned his Bachelor of Science in Political Science, cum laude, from Florida State University and is currently pursuing his MBA at FSU, with an expected graduation in May 2026.
