Biography

Dr. Mohamed Khabou serves as Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department as well as the Associate Dean of HMCSE. He has a Ph.D., an M.S. and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, all from the University of Missouri. Khabou’s earlier projects included an automatic system to index and retrieve images of historical mosaics, automatic recognition of actigraphy signals, the effect of distance learning on student performance, and the automatic detection of land mines. Publications carrying his research findings include IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, Electronic Letters on Computer Vision and Image Analysis, IEEE Southeast Conference, International Conference on Ambulatory Monitoring of Physical Activity and Movement, Neural Processing Letters, and Distance Learning, to name a few. Khabou, who won a Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award in 2013, is a reviewer for many scholarly publications. He joined UWF in 2002.

Research

Dr. Mohamed Khabou’s current research focuses on creating effective features for multi-component image analysis. He is also collaborating with other UWF colleagues to study the underrepresentation of females in engineering and ways to improve the situation. Khabou’s earlier projects included an automatic system to index and retrieve images of historical mosaics, automatic recognition of actigraphy signals, the effect of distance learning on student performance, and the automatic detection of land mines.

Dr. Khabou mentored more than 60 Engineering capstone projects, many of which received regional, national and international awards.
