Jarl ("J.T.") Young

Biography

J. T. Young is the Vice President and General Manager for Florida Power & Light’s (FPL’s) Northwest
Florida region, overseeing regional operations while leveraging his leadership skills in people
engagement and external affairs. With more than four decades of experience in the utility industry, he
previously served as President and CEO of Memphis Light, Gas and Water, leading over 2,500 employees
at the nation’s largest three‑service municipal utility. Young spent 29 years with Gulf Power (prior to its
merger into FPL) in roles spanning customer service, marketing, sales, and information technology,
including serving as Southern Company’s regional chief information officer for Gulf Power. His early
career included engineering positions with Duke Energy Florida and the Tennessee Valley Authority.


A Pensacola native, Young holds an associate degree from Pensacola State College, a bachelor’s degree
in electrical engineering from the University of Florida, and an MBA from the University of West Florida.
He is also a graduate of Harvard Business School’s General Management Program and Southern
Company’s Senior Leadership Development Program.


Young is an active community leader, serving on the boards of Baptist Healthcare, Health and Hope
Clinic, Pensacola Habitat for Humanity, and the NW Florida Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He chairs
the Baptist Healthcare Finance Committee and he co‑chairs the Northwest Florida Business Alliance.
Young has been recognized with numerous honors, including the PACE “Community Leader of the Year”
award, the Martin Luther King Jr. “Living the Dream Award,” and the Pensacola State College
Distinguished Alumni Life Achievement Award. His past service includes board roles with United Way,
the Memphis Chamber of Commerce, and several civic and nonprofit organizations, as well as a
gubernatorial appointment to Florida’s Judicial Nominating Commission.


J. T. and his wife, Deidre, have two adult sons and a grandson.
