What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS) is a spatial system that creates, manages, analyses and maps all types of data. GIS helps users understand patterns, relationships and geographic context. Professionals in this field use geospatial data and software to conduct analysis and create visualizations.


Where is GIS being used and how?
GIS technologies allow for comprehensive solutions in areas such as urban planning, conservation, transportation and more. GIS also plays a fundamental role in environmental science and government agencies, but this ever-evolving field also reaches to numerous other industries and subfields. From gaming to social services, GIS applications allow various industries to address challenging problems of both small and large scales more effectively.

What job opportunities are available in GIS?
GIS is a broad field with opportunities for career growth across numerous industries including app development, business, computer programming, conservation, cybersecurity, emergency services, engineering, forestry, government, public health, public safety and technology.

Can I find a job with just a GIS certificate?
Minimum qualification requirements for most entry-level GIS positions, such as GIS technicians, include a GIS Certificate or similar experience. UWF GIS Certificate program curriculum includes a required internship that provides students with valuable, hands-on experience before entering the workforce.
