September 30, 2025 | By River Fundock, Student Intern, Department of Communication | Edited by Karen Tibbals, CASSH Communications Coordinator

Steven Wiktorski, a 2023 graduate of the University of West Florida (UWF), is currently a second-year law student at Florida State University College of Law. His journey from political science pre-law major to aspiring lawyer has been shaped by his experiences at UWF and his involvement in extracurricular activities that fostered both personal and professional growth.

Wiktorski’s interest in politics initially led him to pursue a major in political science with a pre-law specialization. However, as he delved deeper into the field, he realized that the highly competitive world of politics wasn't a good fit for him. This insight, coupled with his desire to keep law school as an option, proved invaluable. "My time at UWF laid an incredibly solid foundation for a career in law," he reflects.

At UWF, Wiktorski honed his understanding of political systems and legal principles—skills that would later serve him well in law school.

The courses I took at UWF taught me all about our political and legal systems. I also learned how to read court opinions, a skill that has become invaluable in law school. These skills helped him feel well-prepared for the rigorous challenges of law school and allowed him to quickly adapt to concepts that many of his law school peers encountered for the first time. - Steven Wiktorski, Law Student

Outside the classroom, Wiktorski was heavily involved in the Student Government Association (SGA), an experience that helped him develop critical interpersonal and leadership skills. "It taught me how to work with all kinds of different people and personalities. It also taught me the importance of giving back to the community you are a part of," he says. His time in student government solidified his belief in the power of service and engagement, lessons he continues to apply in both his academic and professional life.

After graduating from UWF, Wiktorski continued his academic journey at FSU Law. He has found law school to be incredibly challenging, but also rewarding. "Law school has been an incredibly challenging experience, but I have learned a lot and feel well prepared to embark on my journey as a lawyer," he shares. His internships with a criminal trial judge and a large civil law firm have provided him with valuable hands-on experience. In addition, he is now a member of FSU’s prestigious law review, the flagship academic publication of the college.

Wiktorski credits his success in law school to the preparation he received at UWF, particularly in the constitutional law classes taught by Dr. Ramsey, chair and professor of the Reubin O'D. Askew Department of Government. "The Constitution is really the foundation of all American law, so these classes were vital to my education," Wiktorski explains. The classes, taught in a law school-like format, helped him transition smoothly to the demands of his current studies. He is currently working on papers related to First Amendment issues and the presidential pardon power, the latter of which he hopes will be published.

For students considering a major in political science or law, Wiktorski offers one key piece of advice: get involved.

"Whether it’s student government or another organization on campus, getting involved allows you to make new connections, learn valuable interpersonal skills, and feel more connected to the community as a whole," he says.

His experiences at UWF have shown him the importance of engagement, and he encourages students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them.

Steven Wiktorski’s path from UWF political science major to law student at FSU is a testament to the value of a well-rounded education, hard work, and the pursuit of one’s passions. His story highlights how UWF’s College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities (CASSH) prepares students for success in law and beyond. As he continues his journey, Wiktorski is determined to make a positive impact on the legal profession, guided by the foundation laid during his time at UWF.
