Dr. Carla J. Thompson

Biography:

Dr. Carla J. Thompson is a Professor in the School of Education with a joint appointment in the Department of Nursing and Usha Kundu, MD College of Health, and Director, Community Outreach Research and Learning (CORAL) Center, a Florida Board of Governors sanctioned center.

She teaches educational research, statistics, and evaluation courses; advises doctoral students, directs UWF CORAL Center, chairs dissertation committees, and serves the research/statistics needs of the Nursing Department.

Thompson, who joined UWF in 2006, previously was Associate Professor of Graduate Educational Statistics and Research and Director of CORAL.

Thompson’s research has examined the effects of breastfeeding education on Native American women, healthy energy and emotion in elderly populations, responsible conduct of research conduct, homeless veterans, test statistics anxiety and improving employability for people on welfare.

Publishers include Journal of Workforce Development, International Journal of Special Education, Journal of Research and Advanced Studies, and Mathematics Education Research Journal, and Accountability in Research Journal.

These peer-reviewed publications are in addition to chapters that she has written for books.

Thompson’s recent research focused on characteristics of homeless high school students, teachers’ perceptions and intercultural sensitivity, techniques of teaching social science statistics, and research integrity for sensitive populations.

CORAL engages UWF graduate students in authentic research and evaluation projects, serves community-based organizations by conducting applied research and evaluation projects, and promotes applied research and publication efforts of UWF graduate faculty.

Thompson has a B.S. in Mathematics, a M.T.A. in Mathematics Education, and an Ed. D. in Research and Evaluation/Educational Leadership, all from the University of Tulsa. In addition, she did Post Masters Work in Curriculum and Instruction at Oklahoma State University and Post Doctorate Work in Educational Technology at the University of California at Berkeley.
