Biography
Dr. Shim Lew is an Associate Professor in the School of Education. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in TESOL and secondary education. Her research focuses on teacher education for multilingual learners, disciplinary language and literacy development in STEM, bilingual education, and qualitative research methodology.
Her scholarly work has been published in TESOL Encyclopedia, Applied Linguistics Review, Educational Review, Science Education, and other peer-reviewed outlets. She has been awarded National Science Foundation (NSF) grants for interdisciplinary research projects bridging language education and science education. In addition, Lew has also conducted research in building global connections through translanguaging in international contexts.
Lew began her career as an English teacher in a middle school in Seoul, Korea. After she taught in middle school over seven years, she earned her M.A. at the Pennsylvania State University and her Ph.D. at the University of Georgia and joined the UWF faculty.
Degrees & Institutions
Lew received her bachelor's degrees in English Education and French language/literature from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. She went on to earn her master's degree in Applied Linguistics from the Pennsylvania State University and completed her doctorate degree in Language and Literacy Education with an emphasis on TESOL from the University of Georgia.
