Biography
Dr. Lela Hobby, DNP, MSN, APHN-BC, Assistant Proessor of Clinical Practice, teaches online courses in the RN to BS program. This program is for RNs completing their bachelor of science degree in nursing. She teaches health assessment, evidence-based practice, and public health and community nursing.
Dr. Hobby is a board-certified, advanced-practice public health nurse who has experience developing and implementing community-based health promotion programs. Her main areas of research interest focus on disaster preparedness, preventing obesity and promoting oral health care in pre-school children.
She has co-written articles in peer-reviewed journals on various aspects of adolescent well-being. She was involved in a blinded study, published in the Journal of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, that compared the injection pain associated with the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine with other vaccines.
She also has an academic interest in improving nursing education through interprofessional education. She collaborated with another faculty to present an international workshop on best practices in interprofessional education, focusing on communication in simulations. The workshop was presented in Vejle, Denmark, at the conference, “Simulation-based Learning and Training-aiming at Generation neXt.”
Before coming to UWF in 2010, she was a clinical instructor in public health nursing health at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is a registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance and an American Council of Exercise personal trainer.
She received a bachelor’s in nursing from Medical College of Georgia, master’s in family health nursing with a minor in nursing education from University of San Diego, and doctorate in nursing practice in public health from University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
