Theatre

Our department is an exclusively undergraduate audition-only program offering individualized training in performance, design/tech and management through the classroom, laboratory (productions) and professional development opportunities. The faculty is actively involved in professional theatre, opera and dance companies outside the University offering students current skills and professional connections.

Department of Theatre

The Theatre Department offers undergraduate programs designed to provide the training and experience to help our students grow to the next level. The department is small enough to provide one-on-one work with instructors, but large enough to deliver a wide range of realized production opportunities. Students are encouraged to become involved in their first semester on campus and receive a wide range of opportunities in all areas of Theatre. One of the key features of the Department of Theatre at UWF is the BFA degrees in Acting, Musical theatre, and Design and Technology. All the faculty are engaged in professional theatre, opera, and dance companies outside the University. This level of professional engagement enhances students' experience by ensuring that their education is pre-professional training.

Audition Requirements

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre is an audition-only program. Students wanting to major in Theatre must select one of the three areas—musical theatre, acting, or design technology—and audition in that area. Students will be assessed annually to demonstrate successful progress toward a degree. BA in theatre, BA in arts administration, and minors in theatre do not require an audition.

Audition dates for the 2024/2025 semesters are November 16, 2024, January 25, 2025, February 15, 2025, and April 5, 2025. Please contact theatre@uwf.edu for further details.

Standing Ovation Performance Scholarship

The Theatre Department is an undergraduate-only program designed to provide the training and experience needed to help our students grow to the next level. The department is small enough to provide one-on-one work with instructors, but large enough to deliver a wide range of realized production opportunities. Students are encouraged to become involved in their first semester on campus and receive a wide range of opportunities in all areas of Theatre. One of the key features of the Department of Theatre at UWF is the degree to which all the faculty is engaged in professional theatre, opera, and dance companies outside the University. This unique level of professional engagement enhances the experience of students by ensuring that their education is pre-professional training.

Recruiting performance majors is very similar to recruiting student athletes. It is a very specialized field and students have invested a lot of time and money in building their skills. Getting the top students from the region and around the country often requires being able to offer a scholarship, which we are currently unable to provide. Recruiting these top students helps elevate all the students in the class and builds the program's reputation and our ability to place students after graduation. The Standing Ovation Scholarship will enhance the program and patrons will have the recognition of knowing they are a key part of that growth.

Please consider purchasing a seat or donating whatever you can afford. For more information, please contact the Theatre Department office at 850.474.2146 or theatre@uwf.edu
