Biography

Dr. Chelsea L. Greer, Assistant Professor, teaches a variety of courses and the Undergraduate and Graduate levels centering on the application of Counseling/Clinical Psychology. As a licensed Counseling Psychologist, she is also involved in training students in the LMHC program.

Dr. Greer’s clinical interests include treatment of trauma-related disorders, vocational assessment and counseling, integration of religion & spirituality in therapy, and the mental health challenges of young adulthood. Dr. Greer brought the JED Campus program to the University of South Alabama, forming a campus-wide multidisciplinary team tasked with assessing and responding to the state of mental health of the students and resources and policies within the campus environment. The overall goal of Jed Campus is to reduce rates of suicide and substance abuse related issues by creation of a systemic safety-net across educational institutions.

In her research, Dr. Greer studies the process of forgiveness. This includes the difficulties involved with living out religious values, social identification effects on the process, and value-congruent interventions to aid those who wish to forgive but find it challenging. Dr. Greer received a grant as the Principal Investigator from the Templeton Foundation to work with local church leaders in Mobile, AL to be Mental-Health & Trauma informed. As part of this project, Dr. Greer and colleagues developed a curriculum to be used in training future leaders within the congregation on these subjects. This project was completed in 2018.

Dr. Greer has previously worked as the Associate & Training Director of the University Counseling and Wellness Center at the University of South Alabama, and as an Assistant Professor in Psychology at Spring Hill College. Dr. Greer received her Master’s in Community & School Counseling at Michigan State University, and her Master’s and Doctorate in Counseling Psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University. She completed her Pre-doctoral internship at the Thomas E. Cook Counseling Center at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
