Biography

Rachel Mars serves as the director of advising for the Usha Kundu, MD College of Health

Mars began her advising career at Samford University in the Brock School of Business

A first-generation college graduate, she has a Bachelor of Science in communication disorders from Auburn University and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of South Alabama. Mars began her career in higher education in Residence Life at South Alabama and the University of Alabama – Birmingham. Following her time in residence life she transitioned to Advising where she served as an Academic Advisor at Samford University in the Brock School of Business. During her time at Samford University, she led first-year advising, orientation, outreach, and scholarship and recruitment efforts. Mars later transitioned to Primary Program Advisor for Health Care Management at the UAB School of Health Professions, where she was given progressive advising responsibility/leadership leading a team of six professional advisors.

Her philosophy regarding advising is to focus on the common goal which is to help students achieve their dreams and have success. She subscribes to the Appreciative Advising style and works to help students and advisors grow in their roles.

In her free time, Mars is an avid wildlife and nature photographer. Her dream is to one day travel to Italy and photograph some of Italy’s historic landscapes.

Mars will be advising the Master of Public Health – Global Health students.
