Biography

Nicholas Croghan, adjunct and director of Pensacola Museum of Art (PMA)

Croghan is a multimedia artist who uses traditional and non-traditional materials, such as wood panels, stone, eggshells or old turntables, to create 2D and 3D art objects. These objects provide a multi-sensory experience that is aesthetically engaging, conceptually provocative and layered with levels of meaning. In his recent work, he uses gold and silverpoint as the primary medium. Metalpoint processes involve an intricate drawing technique used since the middle ages. These processes allow Croghan to investigate the fine details of mechanical systems which are the subject matter for his current body of work.

Croghan, who studied gallery and museum practices as an undergraduate and graduate student, found that the field provides opportunities to curate collections that inspire people. As director and curator for TAG at UWF, he produces 10 to 12 shows per year. While the gallery spotlights students’ and faculty’s creativity, it also hosts international artists. In 2014, TAG hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) show that exhibited artists from Britain, Paris and Israel.

In 2014, his artwork “Facades” received the Cinco Banderas Permanent Collection Purchase Award. Before coming to UWF in 2012, he managed traditional academic galleries, commercial sales galleries, outsider/folk art organizations, multicultural centers and directed expansive museum exhibition programming.   

Degrees & Institutions

Croghan received a bachelor’s of fine arts degree in drawing from Murray State University, a master’s degree in art from the University of Louisville, and a master’s in fine art degree in drawing from Colorado State University.
