The UWF Speech and Debate Team has had a strong start to the 2017-2018 competition season. The last weekend of September, the team competed in Tallahassee for the first tournament of the season.
During the Tallahassee Community College Capital City Classic Tournament, Rebecca Page, professional accountancy major, received third place in After Dinner Speaking and fourth place in Impromptu Sales. Kaitlyn Gardner, theatre major, received fifth place in ADS and Susanna Rogers, communication major, ranked first place in individual rounds of ADS. The team won third place Team Sweepstakes.
This past weekend, the team competed at the 3rd Annual Hub City Swing tournament at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. Rogers received 6th place in Editorial Impromptu.
Of the first tournament, Haley Revette, UWF Speech and Debate graduate assistant, said, “This was a great opportunity for our competitors to present speeches with little preparation, which was a great learning experience all around.” Revette says the team is honored to have dedicated and successful team members.
Since the 1970’s UWF has hosted numerous state and national championships. In one week, the UWF Speech and Debate Team will welcome competitors from colleges all over the country to compete in the annual Marks Invitational Tournament. The Marks Invitational Tournament has served as an annual UWF landmark event since the 1970’s. Each year, students from 10- 15 universities around the nation participate in the tournament. This year, the UWF Marks Invitational Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 3-4.
