Biography
Dr. Joseph Herzog, a professor in the Department of Social Work, has more than 20 years experience as a human service provider and director of counseling centers.
Herzog joined UWF in 2008 after receiving a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina. He wrote his dissertation on “Secondary Trauma in Family Members of Combat Veterans.”
In much of his research, Herzog examines how families are affected by deployments, especially to combat areas. He studies such aspects of military deployment as parenting stress and the impacts on adolescents, children and spouses. He is co-author of a book, “Systemic Social Work Practice with Military Populations,” and his work has appeared in chapters of other books about military families and the challenges they face.
Herzog has studied other topics, too – homelessness and incarceration, religiosity and social work values, and rural social work practice, to name a few.
His peer-reviewed articles have appeared in Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Humanities and Social Sciences Review, Military Behavioral Health Journal, Social Work with Groups, and Child & Family Social Work.
Herzog also has been a licensed clinical social worker.
