Biography
Dr. Armaghan Mahmoudian is an Assistant Professor of Movement Sciences and Health at University of West Florida, where she teaches anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, functional kinesiology, and research methods. She is deeply committed to mentoring students and goes above and beyond in her efforts to support and mentor her students, providing them with the guidance they need to excel in their studies and pursue their career goals. Dr. Mahmoudian's dedication to teaching and mentoring has been recognized by the Student Government Association, who awarded her the 2022 Distinguished Teaching Award. As a clinician-scientist, she is committed to better understanding disease mechanisms and their impact on function and quality of life through the study of clinical, structural, and functional characteristics of patients in prospective longitudinal studies. Dr. Mahmoudian's research interests include personalized medicine and personalized disease prevention at population levels, with a particular focus on the challenges posed by an aging population. She is an active member of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) committees and works to improve communication of the latest findings to patients and healthcare professionals from Osteoarthritis (OA) and other disciplines, promoting awareness towards secondary prevention and early-stage knee OA intervention as a window of opportunity for improved patient outcomes. Currently, Dr. Mahmoudian is a member of the OARSI early-stage Knee OA initiative, where she is contributing to the development and validation of classification criteria for early-stage knee osteoarthritis. In addition, Dr. Mahmoudian is also deeply interested in the challenges of post-traumatic osteoarthritis, particularly in athletes. Her research in this area seeks to better understand the mechanisms underlying the development and progression of this condition, as well as to identify effective prevention and treatment strategies that can help athletes maintain their joint health and function over time. Dr. Mahmoudian has authored several peer-reviewed papers in highly regarded journals, including those as prestigious as Nature, and is actively engaged in the dissemination of her research findings and the advancement of the field through her participation in various international conferences and events. She has presented her work at conferences such as OARSI, the Orthopedic Research Society and the American College of Rheumatology, among others, where she has shared her insights with colleagues and learned from the latest developments in the field. Her commitment to staying abreast of the latest research findings and sharing her own work underscores her dedication to advancing the field of movement sciences and health. Dr. Mahmoudian completed her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physical Therapy before pursuing a joint doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences, which she earned from two leading institutions in Europe: KU Leuven in Belgium and VU in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She also has years of experience as a national physical therapist and has worked with athletes across a variety of sports, from internal championships to high-performance international events.
