Navigating the University Maze: Your Advisor is Your Guide!

Hey everyone! Welcome to the School of Education’s Academic Advising Blog, your one-stop shop for all things academic success! I'm Jenny Feysa, and I'm so excited to connect with you here. Whether you're a brand-new student just starting your academic journey or a seasoned graduate student preparing for graduation, this blog is designed to be your go-to resource. 

Our SOE Advising Team will update this blog every month with helpful topics, tips, and advice.

Think of college as a giant maze. Exciting, right? But also a little…daunting. That's where your academic advisor comes in! We're more than just course schedulers (though we definitely do that too!)..

So, what exactly does an advisor do? Well, we wear a lot of hats! Here's a peek at just a few:

• The Navigator: Need help figuring out which major is right for you? We can explore your interests, skills, and career goals to help you find the perfect fit. Lost in the sea of course catalogs? We can help you map out your degree plan and make sure you're on track to graduate.
• The Resource Guru: UWF is full of amazing resources! We can connect you with tutoring centers, writing workshops, career services, financial aid offices, self-care assistance, and so much more. Consider us your personal connection to all the great things UWF has to offer!"
• The Cheerleader: Higher education can be challenging, and sometimes you just need a little encouragement. We're here to celebrate your successes, help you overcome obstacles, and remind you that you've got this!
• The Problem Solver: Running into a roadblock? Whether it's a tricky course, a scheduling conflict, or just feeling overwhelmed, we're here to help you find solutions and get back on track.
• The Listener: Sometimes, you just need someone to talk to. We're here to listen, offer support, and help you navigate the ups and downs of University life.
• The Teacher (of Critical Thinking!): We don't just give you the answers; we empower you to find them yourself! We'll help you develop critical thinking skills so you can analyze your options, weigh the pros and cons, and make informed decisions about your academic path. Think of us as your personal thinking partners, guiding you through the process of evaluating information and developing effective problem-solving strategies. We want you to become independent, resourceful learners who can confidently navigate any challenge that comes your way, both at UWF and beyond.
