The perfect complement to any of the majors offered by the University of West Florida, the professional education minor is designed for content majors to complete the requirements for a temporary certification in Florida.

Why Study Professional Education at UWF?

The professional education minor features dedicated program faculty and flexibility to work around any schedule. The program allows students to tailor the courses of study around their content areas, such as mathematics or social studies. The coursework meets the requirement of the Professional Training Option and is consistent with the program requirements of the Florida Department of Education.

What You Will Learn

The professional education minor is designed for content majors to complete the requirements for a temporary certification in Florida.

Requirements for the three-year Nonrenewable State of Florida Temporary Certification Pathway include:

  • Completing a bachelor’s degree with a minor in education
  • Passing the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations: General Knowledge Test, Professional Education Test and Subject Area Examination
  • Applying for Temporary Certification through the Florida Department of Education
  • Moving from temporary to professional certification

The State of Florida Department of Education determines the requirements for converting a Three-year Nonrenewable State of Florida Temporary Certification to a Renewable Professional Certification to teach in the State of Florida as:

  • Complete an approved Florida Professional Training Option for content majors (UWF education minor)
  • Pass the FTCE exams listed above
  • Teach successfully for one year
  • Complete a district-approved competence demonstration program for first-year teachers

UWF programs offered at the Pensacola campus or UWF Emerald Coast may require online courses. Discuss the program requirements and planning with your academic advisor.
