The University of West Florida is one of 177 universities to participate in the SEA-PHAGES (Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science) program, jointly administered by the University of Pittsburgh and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science Education division. Through this program, laboratory techniques and theories will support the biological aspects of discovery-based isolation and the study of novel bacteriophages. These are the viruses that infect bacteria. This two-semester research-based course provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to experience science first-hand, take ownership of one's lab experience and discovery, and attend scientific conferences. Invitations to incoming freshmen will be sent each spring and up to 18 students will be selected to participate.

SEA-PHAGES participant students will obtain credits in Biology I and II lab (Fall BSC2010L and Spring BSC2011L) or their equivalents depending on students’ majors.
