Strength and Conditioning
UWF Student Athlete Handbook strength and conditioning information.
Overview
- Prior to participation all athletes must attend an orientation on common risks involved in strength training, the proper execution of various exercises, and the possible consequences if proper technique is not employed.
- Prior to participation, all athletes must get a medical checkup from the sports medicine staff.
- The weight room requires concentration. Horseplay, loud or offensive language, or temper tantrums are to be controlled.
- Athletes should show respect for equipment and facilities at all times; spitting in or defacing the facility is not tolerated and will result in immediate consequence to be determined by the strength and conditioning coach.
- Athletes should never set plates or DB’s on the floor or lean them against equipment or walls. Athletes should return dumbbells to the rack in the proper place according to the specific weight room set up. Athletes should not drop or throw either weights or dumbbells.
- When applicable, athletes are to have a workout program card, follow it, and record contents.
- Athletes are required to use collars on the end of the bars no matter how much weight is on the bar.
- Bumper plates are required when on the platforms for all exercises.
- Athletes will not have electronic communication devices in the weight room (cell phones, Ipod’s, etc.).
- Supervisors are not responsible for users’ personal belongings; either lost or stolen items.
Conduct
- The staff “office” area, computers and telephone are off limits to athletes unless permission is given.
- Tobacco, food, chewing gum, glass bottles, alcohol, drugs and banned substances are not allowed in the weight room; plastic water bottles with caps are acceptable and encouraged.
- Equipment should not be taken out of the weight room unless approved by the supervisor. The athlete is responsible for returning the equipment after use.
- Athletes should return any equipment moved from a storage area.
- Athletes should attempt to minimize chalk powder on the floor.
- Athletes should keep feet off the walls and handprints off of the mirrors.
Attire
- Only The University of West Florida issued clothing and/or UWF colors are acceptable. All shirts must be tucked in (if team rule) and shoes tied. Sports bras are not to be worn as tops. Tank tops must be an appropriate length as determined by the strength coach. All shorts must be an appropriate length as determined by the strength coach.
- Athletes should wear proper training attire, particularly shirts and athletic shoes, at all times.
- Metal jewelry such as loose necklaces, bracelets, hanging earrings, and watches are prohibited.
Safety
- If an athlete has an injury that inhibits a portion of the workout, the athlete must let his/her strength coach know so the coach can prescribe a modified program.
- Athletes should provide support and safety to other athletes by spotting any multi-rack or dumbbell exercises (as designated by strength coach).
- Athletes should immediately report any facility-related injury, or facility/equipment irregularity to the supervisor.
- There must be a supervising Athletic Trainer present for any athlete performing a rehab workout.
