Fall 2025 Hours of Operation

The Writing Lab's main location will be open from 10:00 to 5:00 Monday through Friday. All Writing Lab locations will be closed on University-recognized holidays:

  • Labor Day, August 29 and September 1
  • Columbus Day, October 13
  • Veteran's Day, November 11
  • Thanksgiving, November 24-28

Our final day of operation for Fall 2025 is Friday, December 12.

What if I can't make it to my paper reading appointment?

Please cancel your appointment at least twenty-four hours in advance.  If you need to cancel your appointment while the Writing Lab is closed, you may either call and leave a voicemail message or e-mail us.  Please give us your name, the date and time of your appointment, and the name of your paper reader.

If you do not cancel your appointment at least twenty-four hours in advance, your appointment will count as a no-show.

A no-show means that no paper reading took place or that no 24-hour cancellation occurred.

What is the Writing Lab's no-show policy?

Your appointment will count as a no-show if you are more than 5 minutes late or if you don't cancel your appointment at least twenty-four hours in advance.

If you receive two no-shows in a semester, then you will be unable to make any more paper reading appointments that semester.

A Writing Lab assistant might still be available to read your paper, but you'll have to come as a walk-in.

May I visit the Writing Lab as a walk-in?

All Paper Reading appointments are available on a walk-in basis.  Being a walk-in means you do not have a scheduled appointment but that a Writing Lab assistant might be available to read your paper if the assistant's original client doesn't show up.

Walk-ins must fill out a walk-in slip in person and visit us every hour on the hour to see if a Writing Lab assistant is available. Please keep in mind that on certain days, especially close to the end of the semester,  you might not be allowed to sign up for a walk-in if there are already more people waiting in line than paper readers can reasonably expect to accommodate.

No paper readings will begin during the last 40 minutes before the Writing Lab closes for the day.  For example, since the Writing Lab normally closes at 5 p.m., no paper readings will begin after 4:20 p.m.

If we are able to read your paper as a walk-in, the paper reader will have to stop reading 10-15 minutes before the top of the hour, regardless of when he or she began.  The paper reader will spend this time completing a Paper Reading Report for your professor.  The paper reader will scan your paper into Navigate to show your professor that a paper reading took place.

You may fill out only one walk-in slip at a time. If you fill out one walk-in slip, you may not fill out another until after you have been seen as a walk-in. You may visit the Writing Lab as a walk-in as many times as you like during the semester.

We cannot guarantee that all walk-ins will get their papers read, nor can we always guarantee when paper readers will be available for walk-ins, but if you visit us as a walk-in, we will do our best to determine if and when we might be able to help you.
